Deighton,N.& Hocking,A. SWITCHING ON LEARNERS IN THE MIDDLE YEARS Ð A PEDAGOGY OF ENGAGEMENT THROUGH LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES (99.03) Disengagement is a well-documented problem facing teachers and students in the middle years of schooling. Students are frustrated, underachieving, misbehaving to a greater extent and their enjoyment of school is declining. (EQ Australia,1997:10) The challenge of schooling to fully develop the capabilities and talents of every student is profound. This paper, presented at the 1999 National Middle Years of Schooling Conference by my good friends and colleagues Niki Deighton and Andrew Hocking has a simple premise; Using learning technologies in a classroom can make a difference for teachers and learners. This paper explores these aspects and identifies learning technology projects that make a meaningful difference.
