Technology as a Change Agent for the Teaching Process.Apple computerHow technology introduction can change teaching (99.02) The national rush to increase computer technology and networking in schools is having a growing impact on education and the teaching profession. Many schools are providing classroom access to information, knowledge, content, resources, tools, and people via the Internet and school building networks. As computers and networks increase in schools, computer-based educational materials become more practical. Publishers are increasing their curriculum offerings in electronic (digital) form via CD-ROM, computer networks, and the Internet. Thousands of teachers are faced with the dilemma of how to learn to use and effectively incorporate all of these information tools into their teaching practice. Our research team has had the opportunity to work with more than 200 schools across the nation over the past four years as they implemented major technology projects in their classrooms. This technological revolution that is so touted indeed has the potential to do a great deal more than change the form of educational content from paper to electronic media. We have observed scores of teachers who are demonstrating that the technological revolution has the potential to provide the impetus, the tools, and the new structures to transform the practice, the art, and the meaning of teaching.
