Worrell,W. Grommit Schools Surfin' the Net (95.10) This is a post-graduate Descriptive Research project investigating the Global Classroom project. The main purpose of this study is to document the nature of existing conditions of Internet use in Victorian primary schools. In assisting Wendy Worrell in her studies we were hoping to encourage further debate regarding the use and assessment of networked or "learning technologies" in the primary classrooms. The majority of the study utilises response form the Whalesong/DoE Global Classroom project. This project will no doubt act as a snapshot for further research. At the time of writing the majority of the sixty school surveyed had only one computer connected to the internet, with less than3% od schools surveyed having more than 10 computers connected. 56% of schools surveyed were connecting at access speeds of up to 28.8kbps with the remaining 44% os schools conecting at or above 28.8kbps. All primary schools used the connections for email and over 90% of the respondents also utlised the world wide web, FTP and News services. Interestingly enough the largest single percentage of teachers onlie in these schools was registered as 18%. It was also of note that after ahours access to primary students occured in 11% of schools. We consider this to be a significant number at this time. As an informal snapshot of net use in our primary schools, this study will no doubt prove its worth in the years to come.
