BBC. The genetic sequence of Rice decoded. >>>Researchers wanting to work on the sequence will have to sign usage agreements with the Swiss company. Critics claim the access restrictions go against the spirit of open research and will slow the advance of new knowledge.<<< Patents on genetic codes "found in the wild" are really disturbing. BBC. New estimates say there are more than a billion habitable Earth-like planets in our Galaxy. The interesting twist on this is that by the time we get to the point where we are able to travel to these planets and colonize them, the Singularity will be upon us. The Singularity would make travel and colonization moot. There isn't a "Star Trek" future ahead of us. Technology is accelerating too fast. [John Robb's Radio Weblog]
