Future Minds Forum
Friday July 6th 2007
We live in a time of vast changes that include accelerating globalization, mounting quantities of information, the growing hegemony of science and technology and the clash of civilizations. Those changes call for new ways of thinking in school, business and the professions.
Professor Gardner defines the cognitive abilities that will command a premium in the future... the Five Minds for the Future:
- the disciplinary mind
- the synthesizing mind
- the creating mind
- the respectful mind
- the ethical mind
Armed with these well-honed capacities, a person will be equipped to deal with what is expected in the future - as well as what cannot be anticipated. Without these “minds” individuals will be at the mercy of forces they can’t understand - overwhelmed by information, unable to succeed in the workplace and incapable of making judicious decisions about personal and professional matters.
Howard Gardner
“One of the most influential psychologists of his generation”
-The Economist
“By most accounts, Howard Gardner is the most influential living theorist in the education world today”
- NEA Today

New Minister and "Super" Ministry for Education. Former Victorian education minister John Lenders has been named as Treasurer in Premier John Brumby's new Cabinet.
Premier John Brumby has made major changes to the planning, education, and community portfolios in the Cabinet reshuffle announced this afternoon.
The Hon. Bronwyn Pike will head what the Government calls a new "super department" for Education and Early Childhood Development, assisted by new Cabinet member Maxine Morand.
Ms Morand will become the Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development.
Under the plan, children's services will move from Human Services to Ms Pike's new department.
"It will be great news importantly for young children... starting off in the kindergarten system and being better prepared as they go on to school and later in life," Mr Brumby said.
The full press release with the entire Cabinet rundown, can be downloaded from here.
