Telstra has commercially deployed 10 gigabit per second technology, increasing its Internet backbone to manage current on-line traffic and catering for projected future demand, a media release from the telco says.

Telstra business and government director of data products Paul Geason said the company had carried out the enhancement in Sydney and Melbourne in readiness for increasing broadband demand.

Internet traffic grew by 55 per cent in the last 12 months, and this has been attributed largely to increased use of broadband applications by business customers.
