Sydney, September, 2002: The number of Internet users connecting from home by broadband* surged 25 per cent over the past three months, with more than half a million Australians now enjoying high-speed access (>56k), according to latest findings from Nielsen-NetRatings. [Ed -Who said Broadband was just anything >56K? ]
Nielsen-NetRatings information for July saw an additional 150,000 at home users connected to broadband between May and July, bringing the numbers of users to 500,000 and now representing 8.6 per cent of all people who are active online from home.

Finally, someone has decided to reconsider the populist economic mantra of "governments don't build, we buy".. sigh... Congrats to the NSW government.. When it comes to infrastructure and the enabling environment of telecommunications badwidth, it is my expereience that the market force mentality will never serve the higher order need of rapid expansion of capability within very traditional and very limiting business models. Obviously there will be some issues with the ACA - Australian Communications Authority but this is still a re-freshingly constructive development.
The NSW State Government has taken telecomms infrastructure competition into its own hands, calling for expressions of interest for local loops to attach up to 5,000 government sites to broadband connections running off state-owned fibre, with public access to be offered once government agencies are hooked up.
